Latent Semantic Analysis (Tutorial)

چکیده
We will see that the number of eigenvalues is n for an n× n matrix. Regarding eigenvectors, if x is an eigenvector then so is ax for any scalar a. However, if we consider only one eigenvector for each ax family, then there is a 1-1 correspondence of such eigenvectors to eigenvalues. Typically, we consider eigenvectors of unit length. Diagonal matrices are simple, the eigenvalues are the entries on the diagonal, and the eigenvectors are their columns. For other matrices we find the eigenvalues first by reasoning as follows. If Ax = λx then (A−λI)x = 0, where I is the identity matrix. Since x is non-zero, matrix A−λI has dependent columns and thus its determinant |A − λI| must be zero. This gives us the equation |A − λI| = 0 whose solutions are the eigenvalues of A. As an example let

Query expansion based on relevance feedback and latent semantic analysis
Web search engines are one of the most popular tools on the Internet which are widely-used by expert and novice users. Constructing an adequate query which represents the best specification of users’ information need to the search engine is an important concern of web users. Query expansion is a way to reduce this concern and increase user satisfaction. In this paper, a new method of query expa...
متن کاملA Tutorial on Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis
Historically, many believe that these three papers [7, 8, 9] established the techniques of Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis or PLSA for short. However, there also exists one variant of the model in [11] and indeed all these models were originally discussed in an earlier technical report [10]. In [2], the authors extended MLE-style estimation of PLSA to MAP-style estimations. A hierarchica...
متن کاملA Revised Algorithm for Latent Semantic Analysis
The intelligent tutoring system AutoTutor uses latent semantic analysis to evaluate student answers to the tutor's questions. By comparing a student's answer to a set of expected answers, the system determines how much information is covered and how to continue the tutorial. Despite the success of LSA in tutoring conversations, the system sometimes has difficulties determining at an early stage...
متن کاملUsing Latent Semantic Analysis to Evaluate the Contributions of Students in AutoTutor
AutoTutor is a fully automated computer tutor that assists students in learning about hardware, operating systems, and the Internet in an introductory computer literacy course. AutoTutor presents questions and problems from a curriculum script, attempts to comprehend learner contributions that are entered by keyboard, formulates dialog moves that are sensitive to the learnerÕs contributions (su...
متن کاملImproving Internal Consistency in Conditional Probability Estimation With an Intelligent Tutoring System and Web-Based Tutorials
Three Web-based laboratory experiments explored the efficacy of three different Web-based tutorials designed to improve performance on Bayesian conditional probability estimation problems. In each experiment, participants estimated the probability of two events, and two conditional probabilities P(A|B) and P(B|A). Problems reflected five distinct relationships between two sets: identical sets, ...
متن کاملAn Orthonormal Basis for Topic Segmentation in Tutorial Dialogue
This paper explores the segmentation of tutorial dialogue into cohesive topics. A latent semantic space was created using conversations from human to human tutoring transcripts, allowing cohesion between utterances to be measured using vector similarity. Previous cohesionbased segmentation methods that focus on expository monologue are reapplied to these dialogues to create benchmarks for perfo...
